Tips for your first solo trip to Europe

Over 200 million young people are travelling every year, and according to my newsfeed, that all takes place in Europe over the summer. Many will join organised tours, or travel with a friend. However, a growing number are choosing to travel, at least part of the time, solo. The benefits are obvious; do what you want at your own pace without having to stick to a schedule or take another person into consideration. Undoubtedly though, making your first trip alone will feel a little intimidating. Read on for a few tips to help make it a trip you’ll be talking about for years to come.

  1. Pick a good hostel!
    • Look for one with a bar, even if you’re not much of a drinker. Most hostels will have common areas, but you might only find people in there to use the wifi or sleep off a hangover. A bar naturally makes people more sociable, and most of the people there will be in the same solo sitch, so don’t feel shy about introducing yourself.
  2. Hit up the free walking tours
    • While everyone knows now that these tours aren’t completely free (although, a 5€ tip isn’t a big ask, you stingy bastard), they do still represent some of the best value, particularly or a solo traveller. A) these tours are usually quite informative B) the perfect way to orient yourself around a new city and C) a good place to strike up a conversation with some fellow walkers, and maybe meet another friend
  3. Get pics of yourself
    • It might seem a bit vain but you’ll want some pictures of yourself while you’re away, so people don’t start to think you just stayed at home and downloaded Google’s top images! However, you won’t always have someone around to take it. So embrace a little selfie action (but beware the selfie stick in some places!). Or sck up your pride, and ask some strangers for assistance.
