Do you know where the largest Buddhist temple in the Southern Hemisphere is located? You might be tempted to suggest somewhere like Bali, but it’s actually in Berkley, a suburb of Wollongong. The Nan Tien Temple is celebrating 20 years of integrating Eastern and Western cultures this October, and it’s a fantastic experience right in our backyard.
Walking the grounds you will see monks practicing calligraphy, running ceremonies, and leading guided tours. After you finish taking in the serene beauty of the temple and its grounds, stop for lunch in one of the restaurants. Vegetarian only; meat, fish and alcoholic products are strictly prohibited from the grounds.
They also run a range of classes, courses and retreats, including an annual, week-long monastic retreat where a non-buddhist can learn traditional buddhist etiquette, experience the monastic lifestyle and cultivation of the mind and body.
Even if you don’t have a week to shut the world off, definitely spend at least one day exploring this unique attraction that’s right here in the South Coast.
Nan Tien Temple is located on 180 Berkeley Rd, Berkeley NSW and is open from 9am – 5pm.
